Q – Who can join the WI?

A – Membership is open to any woman aged 18 or over, there is no upper age limit. Whilst membership is only open to women, men can take part in many of our activities and events.

Q – What sort of things do you do?

A – All sorts! The WI is here to inspire you through sharing and developing experiences, knowledge and skills. At Totnes WI we aim to embrace both the traditional and the modern, so yes, some of us make some amazing jam and cakes! Have a look at the ‘Groups’ section for more details of our regular activities.

In addition –

• There is a guest speaker or planned activity at each Monthly Meeting. The talks given range from the comic to the thought provoking; from hand bell ringing to re-wilding at Sharpham.
• There are one-off events, such as theatre trips, trips to the Races on Ladies Day and and trips to local places of interest.
• The Devon WI also offers opportunities for experiencing new challenges.

Q – When and where do you meet?

A – Our regular meeting is held on the 3rd Thursday of every month (except August) at 7.30pm at the Totnes Boating Association at Steamer Quay, Totnes. Our  Groups meet at various times throughout the month – the sample calendar gives you an idea of what else is happening.

Q – How much does it cost?

A – Subscriptions are set annually by the National Federation of Women’s Institutes.  The annual subscription for 2023 was £31 (subsidised), with new members paying a pro-rata amount depending on the quarter in which they join.

Q – Can I ‘try before I buy’?

A – You are welcome to attend two of our meetings as a visitor to get a flavour of what we do. The first visit is free, you’ll be asked to pay £3.00 on the second, then you’ll be asked to become a member if you attend a third.

Q- What commitment I have to make as a member?

A – The WI aims to offer all kinds of opportunities to all kinds of women.  It’s not a ‘one size fits all’ organisation so our members can be involved in the ways that suit them; there are no hard and fast rules or expectations. Join all the Groups we have running or just come to the Monthly meetings,  you’ll be welcome whatever your level of involvement.
